Almost Free - Virtual Lecture

Learn the story of Samuel Johnson’s struggle for freedom in early 19th century Warrenton. Born enslaved in 1794, Johnson worked as a waiter at the Norris Tavern. His enslaver promised him freedom if he could raise $500. The author relates the complicated struggle Johnson endured to free himself and his family. The action all takes place in a roughly three block area of Old Town and recalls names and places familiar to Fauquier County citizens even today.
